Informed Consent
There are many tests and procedures available to women during pregnancy, and many options in childbirth. There may be times when your care provider will need your consent to perform, or not perform, a certain test, procedure or intervention. At these times, it is your right to be fully informed as to the procedure, its purposes, benefits, risks and any alternatives you may have. The following questions may help you get the information you need to feel confident in your decisions.
During pregnancy, these questions may be helpful to you:
1. What are the benefits of doing this test or procedure?
2. What are the risks?
3. How dependable are the results of this test?
4. Is there anything we would do differently based on the results of this test?
5. What would happen if we didn't do it at all?
During labor (or unforeseen circumstances during pregnancy), these questions may be helpful to you:
1. Is this an emergency or do we have time to talk?
2. What are the benefits of doing this?
3. What are the risks?
4. If we do this, what other procedures or treatments might we end up needing as a result?
5. What else could we try first or instead?
6. What would happen if we waited an hour or two (a day, week, etc.) before doing it?
7. What would happen if we didn't do it at all?
